Strawberry Hill Fiddlers - 1:15
The Strawberry Hill Fiddlers are teen string players from the Poughkeepsie, New York area. Directed by Emily and Carole Schaad and Rachel Handman, the group evolved several years ago from a Suzuki-style program in Rhinebeck. The fiddlers are drawn from developing talent at a day camp in Poughkeepsie that brings together students from all backgrounds, both to experience orchestral music and to learn traditional fiddle music by ear. They have performed with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, Natalie MacMaster, and Barrage, and have recorded several of Jay's compositions. The Fiddlers meet weekly to learn and rehearse a diverse repertoire of fiddle tunes from many cultures around the world. They experiment with harmonies, improvisation and arrangements, and done workshops with Jay Ungar, Ruth Ungar, Bruce Molsky and Darol Anger. Committed to community service, they perform frequently for church groups, nursing homes and in benefit concerts. They have performed as one of just four groups invited to the annual convention of the American String Teachers Association in Kansas City, and have toured the United Kingdom and throughout the United States.
