Need a place to grow your own vegetables, flowers and herbs? Sign up to reserve a full (approximately 700 sq feet) plot for $52 each ($57 for non-residents) at one of the nine Burlington Area Community Garden (BACG) sites. Perfect for the first year gardener, BACG offers half-sized plots for $32 each ($39 for non-residents). Novice and family friendly plots for $18 each ($25 for non-residents) are also available and are a great way to introduce young children and new gardeners to the wonders of nature. The seasonal fee includes BACG membership, Weed 'Em and Reap newsletter, water access, spring and fall site preparation, invitations to garden gathers and an opportunity to meet other gardeners in your area. Depending on the weather plots open for planting in early May and close October 18, 2008. Become part of the gardening community today!
This is a popular program, so apply early by downloading a 2008 registration form here, calling 863-0420 or stopping by the Parks & Recreation Office on Pine Street. Registration Packets are mailed out in February. Returning gardeners have until March 21st to reserve their space. Open registration begins March 24th on a first come first serve basis. Special rates and free seeds are available to those with limited incomes; to apply, contact Chittenden Community Action at 863-6248.
BACG SITES: Tommy Thompson (Intervale), Starr Farm, Ethan Allen Homestead (WVPD), Champlain School (Pine Streeet), Rock Point (Institute Road), Medical Center (East & Colchester Ave), UVM Wheelock Farm (Spear & Swift Streets), Baird Park (Pine Street) and Lakeview (North Avenue).
Novice Gardeners and Family Friendly Plots : Families with children or first time gardeners may sign up for a small (12X10) sized plot at the following locations: New Discovery Garden (at the Ethan Allen Homestead), Starr Farm Community Garden, or the Champlain School Garden.
