DISC GOLF UPDATE:
After holding a public hearing and receiving comments from several hundred people on this topic, the Commission voted unanimously to reject the original proposal for an eighteen hole course at Leddy Park. In making this decision, they cited concerns that have come to their attention about the suitability of some areas of the park for such a development and the overall amount of parkland that would be required to accommodate an eighteen hole course.
After further discussion, the Commission did approve a motion on a 4 to 1 vote to consider an alternative plan. The essence of their motion was as follows:
Leddy Park has the capacity and infrastructure to support additional recreational activities and believes that there is a demand for both passive and active recreation opportunities. They would consider a limited scale course that recognizes the legitimate concerns about safety and compatibility with existing park uses that complies with the following guidelines:
- The course would be limited to nine holes.
- The course would be contained within an area that lies generally east of the large parking lot adjoining the Bike Path and west of existing athletic fields.
- Adequate setbacks would be required from the Bike Path, roadways, existing walking paths, parking lots, and athletic fields to ensure human safety.
- The course would have to be designed by a professional disc golf course designer with input from the staff of the Parks and Recreation Department and the County Forester. The design must minimize the impact to the forest.
The Commission clearly stated that if a course design was presented to them that met the above criteria, they would give it consideration. This does not imply that a course meeting these conditions would be approved; only that it would be considered. Discussions with members of the BTown Disc Golf Club will be held to determine if they want to pursue a new course design that conforms to these criteria.
