Welcome to spring, Burlington! Summer will soon be upon us and this is going to be a non-stop summer of activity. All ten of the Waterfront special events, as allowed within the restrictions of Act 250, have been booked and the department continues to work with several partners to host even more events and sustain the economic vitality of Burlington, specifically along our premier waterfront. We are privileged to host these activities and for the first time welcome the USA Triathlon National Championships in August. Look on the Web for our interactive listings of all of the primary events!

We have a few staff changes, and we’re excited about the new opportunities for these folks and for the department. Jen Stauber is our new Parks Planner who will guide the Penny For Parks (PFP) program and all other parks rehabilitation and development projects. Jen is currently working on the Burlington Waterfront Skatepark and Roller Rink redevelopments, Miller Community & Recreation Center Phase 2 Renovation, North Beach Campground Cottage Renovation, and working alongside the Bike Path Task Force, among many other projects. Jen’s big initiative for spring summer: introducing a public process to help shape a multi-year PFP plan.

Dan Cahill, former Recreation Coordinator, has taken over the role of Land Steward. Dan is responsible for the Burlington Area Community Gardens and the Burlington Legacy Program, managing our conservation lands. This summer Dan will focus on enriching community partnerships and volunteer initiatives as well as enhancing citizen education around the conserved lands – the Urban Wilds.  As of print deadline, the department has not yet hired Dan’s Recreation Coordinator replacement, although we look forward to great new programming for all ages from this professional.

The department is also hiring a long-vacant Parks Operations & Maintenance Superintendent and expects that to be filled by mid-April. The Superintendent will manage the implementation of the maintenance tracking and tree management software this summer, as well as will review and implement ways to make operations leaner and more efficient.

Finally, we welcome the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce as our new partner in operating the waterfront information center. We think the Chamber and crew will make successful ambassadors for visitors and residents alike in finding their way to exceptional summer experiences in Burlington.

We hope that this spring and summer we can provide meaningful Parks & Recreation services for each of you – choose from our hundreds of program offerings and park acres, and from the miles of shoreline and trails. Get out and play and if you aren’t sure how, we promise to show you – just let us know!
